Abstract
Changes in endolymphatic Na+ and K + concentrations and endolymphatic direct current potentials in response to anoxia were monitored in kanamycin sulfate-poisoned and control guinea pigs. During anoxia the endolymphatic Na+ concentration increased, the endolymphatic K+ concentration decreased and the endolymphatic direct current potential decreased and changed its polarity to negative in the control animals. The endolymphatic Na+ and K+ concentrations changed very little during anoxia in the kanamycin sulfate-poisoned guinea pigs, and the endolymphatic direct current potential decreased more slowly than in the control animals and did not change its polarity. It is suggested that the changes in endolymphatic Na+ and K+ concentrations and the changes in the endolymphatic direct current potential may have some close relationship and that the integrity of the organ of Corti is necessary for such changes to occur. Keywords
