Abstract
A complete amino acid analysis of a specimen of salmine sulphate was made. The losses of serine and arginine during the acid hydrolysis of salmine sulphate were experimentally assessed; the serine loss was estimated to be 14% and the arginine loss 0.5%. The amino acids isoleucine, alanine, valine, glycine, proline, serine and arginine were found to occur in salmine in the molecular proportion 1 : 1 : 3 : 4 : 6 : 7 : 50. On this basis the min. molecular wt. of salmine was calculated to be about 10,000 if the protamine is a single substance. The problem as to whether salmine may be regarded as a single substance was discussed briefly in the light of available analytical data. Keywords
