Abstract
Plasma volume and blood volume in normal infants and children have not been finally established. The blood volume is approx. 100 ml. per kg. during infancy and gradually decreases to reach the adult level (84 ml. per kg.) at 4 yrs. of age. Using the modified method of Keith, Rowntree and Geraghty, the author measured plasma volume in renal disease. In acute nephritis the plasma volume was reduced considerably (avg. 49 ml. per kg.) during the stage of diuresis and subsiding edema. In nephrotic nephritis the plasma volume was below normal during the stage of increasing edema and considerably above normal (avg. 77.5 ml. per kg.) during the stage of diuresis. In chronic hemor-rhagic nephritis, there was a low blood volume due to reduction in the total volume of circulating red cell. Keywords
