Abstract
Vitamin requirements for ureolytic bacilli, tested by single omissions, were generally satisfied by various combinations of biotin, thiamin, and nicotinic acid. The latter was required for the growth of several strains of Bacillus pasteurii and B. loehnisii. Strains of B. pasteurii were nutritionally heterogeneous although they were all steno-responsive physiologically. It was suggested that steno-responsive ureolytic bacilli, requiring free ammonia in addition to amino acids, be considered as strains of B. pasteurii. Nutritional screening allows identification of bacilli isolated from urea enrichment cultures. A dichotomous key for the identification of several species in the genus is proposed. Keywords
