Abstract
An attempt has been made to explain large rate constants for Penning-type ionization in condensed rare gas mixtures. Excitons are treated as particles moving rapidly in condensed media with a mass similar to the electron mass. A formula for Penning ionization of atom collisions induced by a dipole–dipole interaction gives cross sections of the correct order of magnitude. Keywords
