Abstract
Crystal fields, with no center of inversion, mix configurations of different parity into an eigenfunction of a rare earth ion in a crystal. Also, different values are mixed. It is shown that configuration mixing can be detected in the resonance electronic Raman effect, whereas mixing allows the occurrence of the irreducible tensor component . Experimental examples are given.
