PRELIMINARY EXPERIENCE IN THE TREATMENT OF HYPERTHYROIDISM WITH POTASSIUM PERCHLORATE*†

Abstract
Twenty-four patients were treated with K perchlorate, a substance which inhibits the trapping of iodide by the thyroid gland. The response in terms of clinical signs and symptoms, of protein bound I content of the serum, and basal metabolic rate were comparable to those obtained by the use of the thiourea group of antithyroid drugs. At surgery, however, some of the glands seemed to be more vascular than those prepared in the conventional way with an antithyroid drug and iodide. Possibly toxic manifestations were gastric irritation.
