Abstract
Cobalt or vitamin-B12 is required for N fixation in Azotobacter vinelandii OP and for the utilization of nitrates by a variety of microorganisms. Nitrate reductase formation in the Azotobacter is dependent on Co or vitamin-B12, and a correlation exists between the location of enzyme activity and Co58 hydroxocobalamine in ribosomal particles. After 30 min. of adding Co or vitamin-B12 to cells deficient in the micronutrient, the bulk of the enzyme is in the supernatant fluid; whereas the cobamide coenzyme remains in the ribosomal particles. The 5,6-dimethyl-benzimidazolylcobamide coenzyme was identified in the Azotobacter. Keywords
