Abstract
The combination of 0.1% Difco yeast extract and 0.1% Difco proteose peptone no. 3 in Hanks'' balanced salt solution plus 20% or 10% horse serum stimulated the rate of growth and produced a higher total count of L cells at the end of 5 days than did a standard reference medium which consisted of 60% medium 199, 20% whole egg ultra-filtrate, and 20% horse serum. The yeast extract-proteose peptone medium supported the growth of Gey''s MBIII strain, Maben strain, and a guinea pig fibro-blast line isolated from the lung. The growth of these cell lines after many passages is undiminished and their appearance is normal. Keywords
