Abstract
The surgical technique of thyroidectomy has not changed significantly since Kocher performed his first procedure for benign goiter in 1872. Since that time, however, considerable advances have been made toward understanding the physiology and pathology of the thyroid gland. The past decade has witnessed an explosion in our knowledge of the molecular events involved in the development and progression of thyroid carcinoma. Keywords
