Abstract
The effect of walking on a treadmill for 15 min. at 3 mph. and 5% grade on the ecg. of 30 normal young men and 100 normal middle-aged men was studied. Out of 39 ecg. items measured before and after the exercise, and 18 items statistically evaluated, 7 items showed a significant difference of the mean changes between younger and older men. The most important functional differences between the groups are greater ST depression and a right axis shift of the T wave after exercise in the older men, which are interpreted as signs of relative coronary insufficiency of the left ventricle. The significance of the results for physical fitness of older men and for exercise tests in clinical electrocardiography is discussed.
