EFFECTS OF ADRENAL AND GONADAL PRODUCTS ON THE WEIGHT AND RADIOIODINE UPTAKE OF THE THYROID GLAND IN THE RAT*†

Abstract
Various adrenal and gonadal steroids were compared for their effect on wt. and radioactive I collection by the thyroid gland. 3 of the 6 gonadal substances produced a definite increase in I uptake without influencing appreciably the thyroid wt. Testosterone, progesterone and estrone increased iodine uptake. Estradiol benzoate was found ineffective in the dose tested. Both ACTH and cortisone significantly decrease I collection. Epinephrine was also found, in the normal animal, to decrease I131 collection by the thyroid. Since formalin did not produce a similar effect, it is assumed that the compounds tested were not working as an alarming stimulus.
