Abstract
The effects of uniaxial stress on the optical spectra of TmVO4 and TmAsO4 have been studied at liquid helium temperatures. For both these Jahn-Teller systems the predominant interactions have been found to be the coupling of the electronic system to bulk strain. In addition the behaviour of TmAsO4 under simultaneous application of uniaxial stress and magnetic field in the plane perpendicular to the c-axis is found to be adequately described by a molecular-field model. Keywords
