Studies on the Toxic Substances Isolated from Mycobacteria

Abstract
Toxic glycolipid from wax fraction of 2 mycobacteria species by column chromatographies on silica gel, silicic acid, and Mg silicate, successively. Chemical analysis and toxicity test indicated that the purified glycolipid was identical with cord factor of tubercle bacilli. The toxic glycolipid content of 2 strains was lower than that in other tubercle bacillus strains. The purified glycolipid was shown to contain 2 sugars (trehalose and glucose), and a mycolic acid of C68 H136O4 (mol. wt. of 1003) as the acid part.
