Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the very recent literature on the regulation of the anterior pituitary gland, beginning with a consideration of pituitary blood flow. Then, the various factors that modulate the secretion of the various anterior lobe hormones are systematically considered. The role of the hypothalamus in regulating the secretion of the gland is given particular attention, and major emphasis is placed on the final common pathway between the hypothalamus and pituitary gland which is provided by the recently discovered hypothalamlc hypophyseal stimulating and inhibiting hormones.
