THE RENAL EXCRETION OF SUCROSE, XYLOSE, UREA AND INORGANIC SULPHATES IN NORMAL MAN: COMPARISON OF SIMULTANEOUS CLEARANCES

Abstract
Keith and his associates studied the renal excretion of sucrose, xylose, urea and inorganic sulphates in 5 exps. on 5 normal persons. In each of the exps. clearances were obtained during 2 consecutive periods in the same morning. Each period afforded a control on the other and in ad dition gave a total of 10 periods with simultaneous clear ances of the 4 substances. Digestive factors were limited to the ingestion and absorption of water and xylose and to the digestion of oatmeal and the absorption of its digestive products. The clearance of sucrose among nor mal men was found to be slightly greater than that of xylose. The clearance of urea was definitely less than that of the sugars, and the clearance of inorganic sul phate less than that of urea.
