Abstract
A patient, aged 32 years, with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism with unusual bone changes and spasticity is described. In addition she had abnormal thyroid function tests and hypertension. Her brother had ankylosing spondylitis. In the pelvis and lumbar spine there was well marked sclerosis and calcification of the ligaments and tendon insertions. The condition was unlike ankylosing spondylitis in that there was no sclerosis of the sacroiliac joints and in the lumbar spine the anterior longitudinal ligament was not involved. The similarity to a case described by Salvesen and Bee (1953) is discussed and the suggestion made that the bone changes are a characteristic feature of some cases with hypoparathyroidism.
