Paravertebral ossification in psoriatic arthritis.

Abstract
Four males with psoriasis and polyarthritis on corticosteroid treatment showed extensive para-spinal ossification in the lumbar and thoracic areas differing from that in ankylosing spondylitis and in osteophytosis; 2 had positive rheumatoid factor tests. The sacro-iliac and apophyseal joints were unaffected. In 1 case the new woven bone was shown post-mortem to occur at some distance from the vertebral body; its structure was similar to sub-periosteal new bone, which occurred in all these patients peripheral to tendon and ligament pull. The condition can be differentiated from ankylosing spondylitis, senile ankylosing hyperostosis of the spine, and other rarer conditions.
