INVESTIGATION OF THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF NORMAL UTERINE, ADRENAL AND PITUITARY WEIGHTS IN THE RAT

Abstract
It was found impossible to administer subcutaneous quantities of estrogen to spayed female rats which would produce normal uterine, adrenal and hypophyseal weights; a dose causing a normal uterine weight led to a more than normal enlargement of adrenals and hypophysis. Neither the addition of 2-4 [mu]g of testosterone propionate nor the intermittent administration of estrogen changed the abnormal weight ratio. The relatively enhanced stimulation of the uterus and vagina in the intact female as compared with the spayed estrogen-treated rat was thought to be due to a difference in the distribution of ovarian estrogen so that the uterus and vagina would receive relatively high concentrations. Ligation of fallopian tubes showed that transport through the tubes was not responsible for this selective action.
