Observation of $B \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ and Evidence for $B \to K^{* \pm} π^{\mp}$

Abstract

We report on a search for charmless hadronic

B

decays to the three-body final states

K_{S}^{0} h^{+} π^{-}

,

K^{+} h^{-} π^{0}

,

K_{S}^{0} h^{+} π^{0}

(

h^{\pm}

denotes a charged pion or kaon), and their charge conjugates, using

13.5 {f b}^{- 1}

of integrated luminosity produced near

\sqrt{s} = 10.6 G e V

, and collected with the CLEO detector. We observe the decay

B \to K^{0} π^{+} π^{-}

with a branching fraction

(50_{- 9}^{+ 10} (s t a t .) \pm 7 (s y s t .)) \times 10^{- 6}

and the decay

B \to K^{* +} (892) π^{-}

with a branching fraction

(16_{- 5}^{+ 6} (s t a t .) \pm 2 (s y s t .)) \times 10^{- 6}
