URINARY STEROIDS AND VAGINAL SMEAR IN OVARIECTOMIZED WOMEN TREATED WITH CHORIONIC GONADOTROPHIN

Abstract
Six surgically castrated women receiving 5000 or 10,000 I. U. of human chorionic gonadotropin daily for 5 days were investigated for changes in steroid excretion and in the vaginal smear. Of these, 4 were receiving X-ray treatment. The excretion of estrogens, 17-ketosteroids, and formaldehydogenic corticoids (hydrolyzed at pH 1.7) did not change (P >0.05). In the vaginal smear, the avg. proportion of superficial and of basal cells remained at the pretreatment level, whereas the proportion of acidophilic and pyknotic superficial cells showed a gradual slight rise which was statistically significant (P<0.01). These cytological changes cannot be descr. as being of a typically estrogenic or androgenic nature.
