THE EFFECTS OF PANCREATECTOMY ON GLYCOSURIA AND KETOSIS IN DOGS MADE DIABETIC BY ALLOXAN1

Abstract
The insulin required to limit glucose excretion of the dog to 2-12 g./day was detd. following destruction of the [beta] cells of the pancreas by alloxan. The animals were then depancreatized and the insulin requirement again detd. It was found that the animal required less insulin following removal of the pancreas than it did after alloxan treatment alone. There was, however, much greater ketosis following pancreatectomy and the animals passed quickly into coma when insulin was with- held. Coma was not observed in the alloxan treated animal. A hypothesis was presented which suggested the elaboration of a second hormone by the pancreas which acts to increase the blood sugar and to prevent ketosis in the insulin deficient animal.
