Abstract
Epididymal fat removed from fasted rats contained more free fatty acid than tissue from fed animals. During incubation of adipose tissue in Krebs-Ringer-phosphate-5% albumin, the production of free fatty acids was variable and sometimes a loss of acid occurred. Glucose alone, and insulin in the presence of glucose, regularly caused a loss of naturally occurring acid, and the amount of acid esterified was still greater when oleic acid was added to the medium. The enhanced esterification of fatty acids when carbohydrate is available provides a means of controlling release of fatty acids independent of the lipolytic rate. Keywords
