The application of fluorescent antibody techniques to medical mycology—A review

Abstract
A review of the significant applications of fluorescent antibody (FA) techniques in medical mycology is presented. The review covers the progress made in the development of FA reagents for the detection of Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida albicans, and other Candida spp., Sporotrichum schenckii, Histoplasma capsulatum, and Blastomyces dermatitidis. The progress made in the application of this technique to measurement of fungal antibodies in sera is described. The authors briefly discuss the basic principles of the FA procedure, some of the problems encountered in performing the tests and the potentialities of the technique. In einer Übersicht werden die bedeutsamen Anwendungsgebiete der Verwendung fluoreszierender Antikörper in der medizinischen Mykologie geschildert. Das Referat umfaßt die Fortschritte, die in der Entwicklung der fluoreszierenden Antikörper-Technik zum Nachweis von Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida spp. sowie von Sporotrichum schenckii, Histoplasma capsulatum und Blastomyces dermatitidis erzielt wurden. Ferner werden die mittels dieser Technik gemachten Fortschritte bei der quantitativen Serumantikörperbestimmung beschrieben. Die Verff. erörtern kurz die Grundlage des Verfahrens, einige der aufgetretenen Probleme und die potentiellen Möglichkeiten.
