Abstract
-5% glucose soln. was administered by subcut. injn. into 2 dogs and 4 human subjects and intraven. in 3 human subjects as controls. The changes induced in the body fluids and in circulatory dynamics were studied. Sub-cut, injn. of glucose solns. always produced transient salt depletion. Large or rapidly administered hypodermoclyses of glucose solns. resulted in marked salt depletion and circulatory collapse, the latter indicated by hemoconcn., increased circulation time, some hypotension, oliguria, and in dogs (measured by the direct Fick method) marked diminution of the cardiac output. Circulation was unaffected by glucose given intraven. It seems probable that circulatory collapse may be precipitated even with small glucose hypodermoclyses in patients with incipient shock. Keywords
