FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RELEASE OF FREE FATTY ACIDS FROM RAT ADIPOSE TISSUE1

Abstract
This report deals with some of the factors influencing the release of free fatty acids (FFA) from the rat epididymal fat pad. Glucose decreased the release of FFA by adipose tissue. This effect is seen to a, lesser degree in tissue taken from untreated diabetic animals. Insulin docs not appear to affect this activity regardless of the source of the adipose tissue. Pyruvate, fructose and galactose decreased the release of FFA by adipose tissue from normal animals. Fluoride completely prevents the action of glucose or pyruvate in inhibiting FFA release whereas iodoacetate prevents only the action of pyruvate. Dinitrophenol has no effect on glucose or pyruvate inhibition of FFA release. This suggests that glucose and pyruvate exert their action by providing precursors of glycerol phosphate needed for re-esterification of the FFA. Glucose inhibits the release of FFA induced by growth hormone, thyrotropin and ACTH, but has no effect upon the release induced by epinephrine.Keywords
