HIRSUTISM

Abstract
This study involved 196 hirsute women, 69 of whom were operated upon (wedge resection of the ovaries). 55% developed hirsutism before the age of 20 and 26% developed hirsutism in connection w?th a severe disease of pregnancy. 58% of those operated upon had polycystic ovaries with hyperthecosis (46%), diffuse stromal luteinization (7%), and elevated urinary 17-ketosteroids (16%). No significant correlation could be found between hirsutism and either ovarian pathology or excretion of urinary 17-ketosteroids.
