Abstract
THE existence of the glucuronic acid pathway of glucose metabolism was recognized as the result of studies of the biosynthesis of L-ascorbic acid and of L-xylulose, the sugar characteristically found in patients with pentosuria (Fig. 1).1 2 3 4 5 Hollmann1 has estimated that approximately 5 to 15 gm. of glucose per day is utilized by this cycle in patients with pentosuria, but the significance and regulation of this pathway in man, who lacks the ability to synthesize ascorbic acid, remains to be clarified. Our interest in the activity of the glucuronic acid pathway in diabetes mellitus stems in large part from the intimate . . .Keywords
