Mechanism of Renin Tachyphylaxis—Restoration of Responsiveness by Tetraethyl Ammonium Ion

Abstract
Four normal [male] dogs were fed choline or choline plus fat in addn. to their stock diet. For 2 dogs, 10 mg. of choline/kg. and 60 g, of lard were added to the stock diet. The daily ration was given at a single meal, and the choline was placed in the center of a portion of meat and given prior to the balance of the meal. The fat and choline were stopped after the 8th day. For the 2 other dogs, the daily stock ration w, as given in 3 equal feedings, and 10 mg. of choline/kg. was administered at each feeding. The results were at variance with the findings of Davis that a macrocytic anemia is produced in dogs by this treatment. In 2 dogs, there was an increase in the Hb and red cell count which was probably produced by the general diet which was rich in hemopoietic factors. In another series of 4 dogs, 10 mg. of choline/kg. was fed in dilute soln. by stomach tube once a day, before the stock diet to which was added 60 g. of lard was given. No macrocytic anemia developed.
