Abstract
In castrated adrenalectomized male rats, 10-50 ug of oestradiol daily for one week caused an increase in I131 uptake in the thyroid. This estrogen action on the thyroid is not mediated through the adrenal. The conversion of iodide into organically bound iodide in the thyroid gland was not inhibited by treatment with 50 [mu]g oestradiol benzoate daily for one week. Endogenous estrogens in a dose too low to cause a change in the histological structure of the thyroid produced an increase in the I131 uptake. These experiments confirm the previous findings that estrogens possess an inhibiting as well as a stimulating action on thyroid activity. Keywords
