Interpretation of Gross Structures in the Energy Spectra of the ReactionC12(O16,α)Mg24

Abstract
Recent studies of the reaction C12(O16,α)Mg24 at E(O16)=145 MeV have revealed the existence of several broad states with Ex(Mg24)=20 to 60 MeV, which have been interpreted as members of the C12 + C12 molecular band Jπ=(10+) through Jπ=(18+). Subsequent investigation, however, has failed to reveal the expected partial width for Mg24*→C12+C12. We show that these states can be interpreted as an extension of the Mg24 yrast sequence which is populated by the well understood high-spin selectivity of α-particle evaporation from a Si28 compound nucleus.
