Abstract
Studies of the nutritional requirements of Lactobacillus gayoni, strain 8289, have led to the detection of at least 2 variants, which appear to be interconvertible. The original variant, which requires nucleotides, folic acid, and an unknown growth factor in liver, is changed by frequent transfers in a medium containing sub-optimal amts. of nucleotides into one that grows well in the absence of any of these materials. A similar adaptation process has been observed for L. mesenteroides 10100. The original variant, which requires pyridoxal- or pyridoxamin-phosphate for rapid growth, is changed into one that grows well in the absence of these nutrilites. Adaptation toward synthesis of B vitamins is somewhat more general among lactic acid bacteria than has been previously recognized. Keywords
