Abstract
A relationship exists between the removal of the yeast from the diet of hyperthyroid dogs and the production of an abnormal liver function. Once an abnormal liver function was produced, treatment of the hyperthyroid dogs with yeast concentrate and vit. B1 injs.. did not improve the condition. The feeding of thyroid gland to dogs produced a marked tachycardia of 150-160 beats per min. The removal of the yeast from the diet after 30-60 days while still feeding thyroid gland caused a marked drop in pulse rate to values below 100 beats/min., Vit. B1 injs. into dogs which had the yeast removed from their diet raised the pulse rate to the previous hyperthyroid level within 24-48 hrs. Thus, the action of an excess of thyroid gland in producing tachycardia depended in some dogs on an adequate supply of vit. B1. The relation of vit. B1 and yeast to the cardiovascular changes and the liver function of hyperthyroid patients is discussed.
