Comparative Immunology. Hemolytic Complement in Amphibia.

Abstract
Summary Representative specimens from 3 orders of amphibia were investigated for the presence of serum complement, using the hemolytic assay system as an indicator. All 3 groups exhibited hemolytic activity capable of potentiation by heterologous antibody, with complement levels within the range of those reported for mammalian species. With certain exceptions, amphibian complement systems appeared comparable to guinea pig complement in their reactions to heat, EDTA, hydrazine, carrageenm, and antigen-antibody precipitate.
