Abstract
Further observations on net splanchnic ketone production (NSKP) were made in metabolically normal human subjects before and after the intravenous infusion of Na octanoate. The addition of glucose or glucose with insulin to the octanoate infusion significantly lowered the net rise in NSKP noted when octanoate alone was infused. In other experiments ketosis in the peripheral blood was observed 3 hours after the induction of insulin hypoglycemia. At that time basal NSKP was 4.7 fold greater than in the control subjects, but the utilization of infused octanoate was unaffected. Cortisone pre-treat-ment failed to suppress the rise in peripheral blood ketone levels and NSKP occurring in the posthypoglycemic state. Keywords
