CHOLINE AND THE PRODUCTION OF POLYCYTHEMIA BY COBALT IN THE RAT

Abstract
Polycythemia, as manifest by a marked increase in the Hb level, was produced in young male rats by the continued admn. of approx. 1 mg. of Co, as cobalt sulfate, daily for 20 weeks as a supplement to an adequate, synthetic diet. The Co-treated rats grew at a decreased rate and the avg. Hb level reached approx. 20 g./lOO ml. of blood. The admn. of choline at a level of either 2 or 6 g./kg. diet, in addition to Co, resulted in the same retardation of growth and the development of a polycythemia to the same extent as found in rats given Co alone. These results are therefore not in accord with the claim that in the dog.choline prevents the production of polycythemia by Co.
