Abstract
When the plasma Na concn. is progressively elevated in dogs by the administration of hypertonic saline the rate of renal tubular reabsorption of Na remains constant in those expts. where the glomerular filtration rate is not significantly affected. If the filtration rate increases or decreases in response to the hyper-tonic saline, the rate of Na transport deviates in the same direction. Therefore, in expts. where the Na level is elevated for a period of 1 hr. or less, any alteration in the rate of Na transport is dependent on the concomitant change in filtration rate. Hypertonic saline profoundly depresses the PAH Tm, and has a significant but less marked influence on glucose Tm. This depression is believed to be non-specific in nature and contra-indicates the use of these detns. as an index of effective tubular mass in expts. in which variations in Na concn. are involved. Keywords
