Abstract
Plasma vol., arterial and venous O2 content, O2 consumption, arterial blood pressure, right auricular pressure, and the hematocrit were detd. in normal bar-bitalized dogs, before and after the intraven. inj. of 50 ml./kg. body wt. of 0.9% NaCl soln., gelatin soln., and serum. Blood vol., cardiac output, total peripheral resistance, and the O2 content of 100 ml. of arterial red cells were calculated. NaCl soln. gave a small and brief in- crease in plasma vol. Gelatin soln. and serum gave a greater and more sustained increase in plasma vol. The inj. of these solns. caused the cardiac output to increase and the total peripheral resistance to decrease. No consistent quantitative relationship was found between blood vol. and cardiac output, between blood volume and right auricular pressure, or between cardiac output and right auricular pressure. Blood serum and a 3.75% gelatin soln. are about equally retained in the vascular bed, both to a greater extent than is 0.9% NaCl.
