Abstract
By means of tracer doses of S35-plasma protein and S35-erythrocytes, a study was made of the distribution of both the plasma proteins and erythrocytes in mice subjected to tourniquet shock. Marked protein accumulation in the injured area (lower half of the body) was observed 2-3/4 hours after tourniquet removal when maximal swelling was reached. Protein accumulation was greatly increased by both saline and plasma therapy administered 1/4 hour after tourniquet release. After plasma therapy a protein quantity equivalent to over 90% of the administered protein accumulated in the injured area. Corresponding protein deficits appeared in the remaining uninjured portions (upper half and viscera) of the body. Largest deficit was in the saline-treated group. In comparable experiments with s35-erythrocytes, shocked animals (both untreated and saline-treated) showed a loss of 9% of the total red cell mass from the viscera into the injured lower half. Keywords
