ENHANCING EFFECTS OF GROWTH HORMONE ON RENAL FUNCTION

Abstract
Daily growth-hormone admn. for 9-12 days doubles the PAH clearance and almost doubles the inulin clearance and PAH Tm in normal dogs and raises the greatly depressed values of hypophysectomized dogs to or above the normal levels. It has but slight effect on these functions in the adrenalectomized dog maintained on DCA pellets. In view of earlier demonstrations that loss of the gonadotrophic and adrenotrophic hormones is not responsible for the great depressions of these renal functions seen after hypophysectomy, and that the effect of loss of thyro-trophic hormone is slight, the principal effect is due to loss of growth hormone or of some substance not yet separated from it. The enhancing effect of growth hormone on renal function may find some therapeutic application.
